Day 18 The track was a wide gravel road and made for easy walking up a gentle grade for the next two kilometres. A short detour here passes under the tree line to Cowombat Flat, where the mighty Murray River of the Mallee and the Fleurieu Peninsula begins as a tiny alpine stream. We saw our first TV in 4 weeks (only foxtel), underwhelming is the nicest I could describe it. Day 5 We convinced one of them to drive us to Dead Horse Gap and back to pick up our food drop. I have only ever hiked for 3-4 days at a time and I have never hiked solo before so there were some new burdens to carry and weigh up! The peak offers the first of the track’s great views, a vista spanning from deep valleys to alpine meadows with wildflowers in hues of pink, blue, white, purple and yellow. From here, the track descends through Cotter Gap, snow gums giving way to blackwood, silver wattle, native cherry, and banksia on a last, flat, section of the walk. Apparently you aren’t allowed to camp in this spot unless your doing the AAWT, and only for one night. We haven’t seen anyone doing the Aawt the other way since Ropers hut. Ate the last of our food for lunch. We had to go right down to the water fall where there was still a small flow and three or four small pools. Woke up to light snow and sunshine. We all lost a lot of weight during the trip, despite eating everything in sight I lost 7kg. Camped at the saddle between Big Hill and Mt Magdala tonight. 17km all up for the day. Then on to the next food drop at Benambra-Corryong road. The moths were cooked over coals, or ground into a paste, and have been described has having a pleasantly nutty taste.
